If the foreign professional qualification is not fully recognized, the deficits can often be compensated for through qualification measures . In this case, it is possible to enter Germany in order to acquire the missing theoretical and/or practical skills. There is a special visa for this.

It includes qualification measures, examinations and, if necessary, language courses that are required to determine the equivalence of the training.

The basic prerequisite is that a notice of recognition has been issued by the competent authority, which decides on partial recognition. Basic information on the recognition of qualifications can be found here.

The following is also required:

  • Confirmation of registration for a qualification course.

  • Proof of sufficient German language skills: German language skills of at least level A2 are required.

  • Secured means of subsistence: The means of subsistence must be secured for the duration of the stay in Germany (2025: at least €1,091 per month). This is possible, for example, through a blocked account or a declaration of commitment.

The visa is applied for at the German diplomatic mission in your home country. It may take some time for the visa to be issued. The visa should therefore be applied for in good time before the start of the training measure.

NOTE: If a job offer has already been made, professional recognition can also be obtained as part of the accelerated skilled worker procedure can also be carried out. This can speed up both the recognition and the visa procedure.

If it is a practical training course in a company, this company must set out in a further training plan which specific measures are to be used to remedy the post-qualification needs identified in the recognition notice and explain what salary the company will pay during the practical training course. In this case, the Federal Employment Agency (BA) must approve the qualification measure.

The respective diplomatic missions abroad provide information on their websites about the specific documents required for the application.

A fee of €75 is charged for a national visa issued for long-term residence in Germany.

In the event of a rejection, the reasons will be communicated. There is a right of appeal against the decision of the diplomatic mission abroad.

The residence permit is issued for up to 24 months and can be extended by 12 months, e.g. if an examination has to be repeated.

Secondary employment is permitted for up to 20 hours per week. If the activity is related to the occupational field in which a recognized qualification is being sought, employment is possible without a time limit. The Federal Employment Agency must approve the employment.
