In accordance with the Act to Strengthen Security in Passport, ID and Aliens Law Documents, only digital photographs may be used to apply for official documents from May 1, 2025.
This applies to all residence permits (residence permit, settlement permit, EU Blue Card, ICT card, mobile ICT card) and official documents issued by the immigration authorities.
The following option is available for the creation of photographs:
Creation of the photograph outside the authority by a service provider
Photo service providers upload the photo taken to a cloud and provide the person concerned with a code. With this code, each authority can retrieve the photograph for a maximum of 6 months. If the code is lost, the code must be obtained again from the photographer. The authority only has access to the stored photograph in the cloud via this code.
If you intend to have your photo taken by a photo service provider, we recommend that you find out about this procedure and the necessary conditions in good time before your appointment at the immigration office.
Supplementary information (as of 09.05.2025):
- Only if the photograph is taken at the authority, the fee for taking the photograph is 6.00 euros (as a PointID device from Bundesdruckerei is used)*.
- All other providers/photographers (outside the authority) charge different/higher fees. These vary depending on the provider/photographer. Find out in advance about the respective prices on site**.
- If several documents are issued at the same time (e.g. eAT and travel document), the fee for the photograph is only charged once
- In any case, the full amount of the fee remains with the foreigners authority
