Picture children daycare and school

School attendance is compulsory in Germany. It goes without saying that all children and young people living in Central Saxony must attend school. Their origin does not matter. Those who do not go to school can even be punished. In the federal state of Saxony, school attendance is compulsory for 9 years and vocational school for 3 years. Children are usually enrolled at the age of 6 or 7. School attendance is free of charge.

Before starting school, children can attend a day care center (colloquially known as Kita ). In Germany, all children from the age of 1 are entitled to care and support in a Kita. This enables parents to work.

There are daycare centers in every town and municipality in the district of Central Saxony. In addition, numerous childminders offer individual childcare for children up to the age of 3. The daycare providers decide on the allocation of free childcare places. Parents must therefore contact the daycare center to find out whether there are any places available.

The daycare information system provides an overview of all daycare facilities and childminders in the district of Central Saxony, including contact details. This can be found online here.

If you have any questions about child daycare, the Child Daycare and Support Department can also provide advice. It can be reached here.

Many questions about daycare centers are answered by the "Bildungswegweiser Kita", which you can find here on the website. In addition to German, it is also available in English, Arabic, Persian, Russian, French and Spanish.

There are 73 elementary school, 29 secondary schools, 13 grammar schools, 14 special schools and 13 vocational schools in Central Saxony. An overview of all schools can be found here online.

Parents are responsible for registering their children for school. The specific registration process depends on the place of residence.

When a child is required to attend school (at around 6 years of age), parents must register them at the elementary school one year before they start school. When registering for elementary school, a medical examination, the so-called school entrance examination, is mandatory.

In order to ensure that foreign children succeed at school, especially if they do not yet speak German, school integration in the federal state of Saxony takes place in three stages:

  • First, lessons take place in preparatory classes,

  • This is followed by further lessons in preparatory classes and partial integration into mainstream classes,

  • Finally, integration takes place in regular classes with additional support.

The federal state of Saxony offers an online registration procedure for newly arrived pupils who are already of school age. Children and young people of school age whose language of origin is not German or not exclusively German can register from the second half of the school year via an online portal portal. Documents such as a birth certificate, vaccination card or documents relating to previous school attendance are required.
